Choosing who builds your software is one of the decisions that weighs most on the outcome. This is the checklist we would use if we were on the other side.
1. Look at the process, not just the price
Ask them to explain how they work: how they define scope, how often they show progress and how they handle changes. A clear process is worth more than a low quote.
2. Ask for previous work and references
Case studies, demos and clients you can talk to. A new company should at least show its own projects and its way of working.
3. Clarify who owns the code
The code and documentation must be yours from day one, with access to the repository and the infrastructure.
4. Evaluate communication
Talk to the people who will build your product, not just a salesperson. Misunderstandings are expensive.
5. Red flags
Fixed budgets with no prior discovery, promises of impossible timelines, no automated tests and reluctance to show progress.
